REMOVING RESTRICTIONS

FROM MUSIC CREATION

CONTROL ONE

Our new musical interface removes restrictions from music creation through the adaptation of everyday technology to perform music.

Our Founders at Digit Music have worked with the revolutionary Able Orchestra for many years now, and in this time discovered a need for a fit-for-purpose controller device that is tailored to suit people that want to create music with a wide range of restrictions. Tablets and touch-screen technology, although excellent options, can still rely on adaptations or newly learned movement from their users.

THE VISION

Many of the previously restricted musicians that we have been working with during this project have used electric wheelchairs, and over time we began to notice a proficiency of movement with regards to using these specific controllers. It was from working with these young people through workshops and performance sessions that we developed a vision to design and build a device that allows more natural integration with music creation from electronic wheelchair users – we bring this to you in the form of Control One.

CONTROL ONE

Control One Ensemble is made up of 10 Control One devices, to allow a whole class to collaborate and perform music.

PROGRAMME OF LEARNING

Our programme of learning is being developed alongside leading education specialists and provides teachers with lesson objectives directly relating to musical soundscapes.

IDEAS

Throughout the programme of learning we offer exciting tips for experimentation, allowing teachers and their class, to create original compositions and performances.

ONLINE

Our online community is being developed to give a platform for performances created using Control One and to enable collaboration and sharing of good practice.

HOW DOES CONTROL ONE WORK?

  • Control One works by taking a regular wheelchair controller and adapting its use
  • Bespoke audio sessions enable users to perform and interact with complex musical phrases using small movements from the joystick
  • All settings can be adapted to allow for differentiated control options for each user
  • Multiple devices can be used in unison to create ensemble performances
  • Control One has proved itself to be a creative tool for composition and learning as well as high level performance
